Market Daily: Robinhood Chain changes the composition of crypto revenue before the Fed decision

Edition 28 October 20265 min read3 sources

In one minute

Robinhood's Q3 crypto transaction revenue includes a new Chain contribution. Excluding it, revenue fell even as conventional crypto trading volume rose. The Federal Reserve's decision is scheduled for 18:00 UTC today; the outcome remains unknown at preparation.

What changed

A new revenue stream changes the earnings comparison

Robinhood's third-quarter presentation supplies a clearer view of its crypto business than the headline growth rate alone. Its Q3 earnings presentation, reproduced by MarketScreener, reports $120 million of crypto transaction-based revenue, up from $100 million in Q2. The Q3 total includes $26 million attributable to Robinhood Chain. Excluding Chain, revenue was $94 million, down 6% sequentially.

Conventional crypto notional trading volume rose from $40.4 billion to $49.8 billion across the Robinhood app and Bitstamp. The app contributed $20.6 billion and Bitstamp $29.2 billion. The same presentation's $21.4 billion volume reading belongs to September's monthly dashboard, so it should not be substituted for the quarterly total.

The commercial implication is a change in revenue composition. Chain provides an additional stream while the established trading business generates less revenue from a larger volume base. This does not identify profit, customer costs or a permanent pricing trend. It does make the new stream important to understanding the quarter's reported growth.

Different activities have different economics. Institutional trading, consumer execution and running infrastructure need not generate the same revenue per dollar traded. A shift toward a lower-revenue activity can reduce the blended ratio even if each product's pricing stays unchanged. Product mix is therefore a plausible explanation worth testing before attributing the result to fee cuts or deteriorating competitiveness.

Central-bank decisions are still ahead

The Federal Reserve's October calendar schedules the FOMC decision for 28 October at 18:00 UTC and the press conference for 18:30 UTC. The statement and subsequent answers are separate information events. A first market response to the statement can be revised when the explanation changes expectations for later meetings.

The policy transmission runs through the expected return on cash, financing costs and investors' willingness to hold risky assets. Those channels can affect crypto, equities and currencies together. Their direction depends on the decision relative to expectations and on the accompanying outlook. The fact that a meeting is scheduled supplies no evidence for a particular bitcoin move.

The ECB calendar also places a monetary-policy decision and press conference on 29 October. Consecutive decisions create a useful test of whether any response reflects a broad rates repricing or an event specific to one market. Neither outcome is known at preparation.

Where activity and capital are moving

The Robinhood figures show why traded volume and company revenue need separate treatment. Using the conventional business only, $94 million divided by $49.8 billion gives approximately 18.9 basis points of reported revenue per dollar of notional volume. The comparable Q2 calculation is $100 million divided by $40.4 billion, or about 24.8 basis points.

These are calculated aggregate ratios, rather than a quoted trading fee. A customer does not necessarily pay that amount, and it is not a measure of execution quality or net margin. The comparison is useful because both numerator and denominator refer to the same reported conventional business and quarter. Adding Chain revenue to that numerator without matching its activity would distort the result.

The decline in the ratio means that growth in conventional turnover did not translate into proportionate reported revenue. To judge durability, the next results need to show whether the business can retain activity while improving its economics, and whether Chain adds recurring revenue after its first reported contribution. Costs would still be needed to assess profitability.

An investor comparing crypto intermediaries should ask what each revenue line represents. Execution income, custody fees and infrastructure income can respond differently to the same increase in activity. A platform with several products may become less dependent on one source, although adding a product also adds operational and regulatory obligations.

The signal to watch

The strongest earnings signal is whether the new stream persists alongside healthy conventional trading economics. A second quarter of Chain revenue would help establish continuity. It would be more informative if accompanied by a clear reconciliation of activity, gross fees, the company's retained revenue and associated operating costs.

The counterargument is straightforward: a quarter with a new product is a poor basis for a stable run-rate forecast. Launch activity, customer incentives and the timing of recognition may all matter. None can be quantified from the headline contribution alone. Annualising the initial figure would assume that those conditions repeat.

There is also no direct bridge from company revenue to the investment return of a blockchain token. An infrastructure operator can collect income without distributing it to public token holders. Any claim of token value capture requires the actual fee allocation or ownership rights, rather than an association with the network's name.

The next 24–72 hours

Today's first dated catalyst is the FOMC statement at 18:00 UTC, followed by the press conference half an hour later. Tomorrow brings the ECB's scheduled monetary-policy communication. Both are planned releases, rather than completed decisions.

The useful sequence is to compare the published policy change and guidance with changes in rates, currencies and risk assets over a consistent window. A crypto-only move would call for a different explanation from a broad response across markets. Immediate co-movement can help frame a hypothesis, but it does not establish a unique cause.

What would change this view

For Robinhood, stronger conventional revenue alongside sustained turnover would weaken the view that the new contribution is carrying the growth comparison. A detailed Chain reconciliation could also show economics that differ from what the initial revenue figure suggests.

For the near-term market setting, the policy decisions and guidance will replace the calendar as evidence. An unexpected change in the rates outlook could dominate company-specific news. Until those documents arrive, the earnings composition is observable and the macro outcome remains open.
