# Market Daily: Solana changes its finality target as BTC and ETH trade higher

Market Daily, edition 1. Published 2026-10-21. 4 min read. Canonical page: https://www.w3match.com/reports/market-2026-10-21

Bitcoin traded at $83,343 and ether at $2,458 on Coinbase Exchange at 09:47 UTC, with each venue-specific 24-hour statistic higher than its corresponding open. Solana's Alpenglow consensus upgrade is scheduled to activate on mainnet in epoch 1064, starting at about 13:20 UTC. The Foundation's roughly 150-millisecond finality figure is a target, not a post-upgrade measurement. USD-pegged stablecoin supply was $303.43 billion on DefiLlama's 21 October daily point, down $333.6 million from the prior point in the same series. That is a stock change, not a measure of daily capital flows.

BTC and ETH are venue-specific last trades, not market-wide consensus prices. The percentage changes use Coinbase's rolling 24-hour statistics for the same pairs. The stablecoin series is a provider-defined aggregate and should not be read as a real-time measure of issuance, redemptions or risk appetite during the session.

## What changed

[Solana's Alpenglow upgrade page](https://solana.com/upgrades/alpenglow) places a concrete protocol event alongside an already firmer crypto tape. At epoch 1064, Solana plans to replace its previous consensus approach, make `confirmed` and `finalized` equivalent, remove vote transactions from blocks and stop using Proof of History to pace block production. The Foundation says the upgrade targets roughly 150-millisecond finality.

Finality is the relevant word. A faster block-production cadence does not by itself tell a trader, market maker or payment provider when a transfer is unlikely to be reversed. If the target holds in live conditions, lower time to irreversible settlement could matter for trading workflows, stablecoin transfers and applications that wait for confirmation before acting. That is the transmission mechanism. It is not evidence today of lower fees, more users or a price effect.

The migration also has operating constraints. Validators need a compatible Agave-based client version and a vote-account balance for the Validator Admission Ticket. The Foundation says Firedancer and Frankendancer are unsupported during the migration. Those details make this more than a branding event: infrastructure operators and indexers may need to adapt, while ordinary users do not need to take a direct action.

The market read should therefore remain conditional. Fresh BTC and ETH readings show stronger prices over their provider's rolling 24-hour window, while Alpenglow supplies a timed technology catalyst. The evidence does not establish that the upgrade caused the move, or that prices anticipate a successful activation. The useful follow-up is independent, timestamped mainnet performance after the epoch begins.

## Where activity and capital are moving

The [DefiLlama stablecoin chart](https://stablecoins.llama.fi/stablecoincharts/all) recorded $303.43 billion of USD-pegged circulating supply at its 21 October daily point. The prior point in the same series was $303.77 billion, a difference of $333.6 million. That small one-day decline is comparable within the provider's own category, but it should not be promoted into a verdict on crypto liquidity or investor flows. Stablecoin supply can change through issuer activity, chain coverage and categorisation as well as user demand.

The important connection is practical. A settlement-speed upgrade can be valuable only if applications, validators and counterparties use it. A large stablecoin stock can support activity only if the relevant assets can move through the workflows that need them. Both are necessary conditions, neither is a direct measure of adoption on its own.

## The signal to watch

The first signal is whether observed finality after epoch 1064 is close to the stated target under normal mainnet conditions. The Foundation distinguishes finality from the network's separate slot-time change, so a faster-looking block feed alone would not answer the question. Independent timestamped measurements and reports from validators or major applications would be more informative than a headline throughput claim.

The second signal is whether the strong 24-hour readings persist after the upgrade window without an identifiable venue-specific dislocation. A move that appears only in one pair or one venue would say less about the wider market than a comparable pattern across appropriately scoped data.

## What would change this view

This view would strengthen if Alpenglow activates on schedule and independent measurements show durable finality near the stated target without a validator or application disruption. It would weaken if activation is delayed, operators report material compatibility problems, or observed finality differs substantially from the target. For the market snapshot, a meaningful reassessment would require a new direct reading rather than carrying forward this morning's prices.
