# What is Hyperliquid? How the exchange works, what HYPE does and who can use it

Hyperliquid explained: how the onchain order book, perps and funding work, what HYPE does, fees, HIP-3 stock markets, who can use it and the main risks.

Hyperliquid is a trading platform that runs on its own blockchain. You connect a non-custodial wallet, deposit USDC and trade perpetual futures or spot tokens on an order book where every order is recorded onchain. The name gets mixed up with a token, a company and a stock, so this guide separates them. Checked on 2 November 2026.

## The short version

- **It is a blockchain built around an order book.** [Hyperliquid's docs](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs) say orders, cancels, trades and liquidations all happen onchain.
- **HYPE is the native token.** It is used for staking and network costs, and it gives fee discounts. It is not a share in anything.
- **Markets go beyond crypto.** Outside teams run perps on stocks, gold and oil through HIP-3.
- **Leverage can erase a deposit.** The platform has also had a serious incident.

## How the exchange works

Hyperliquid is its own layer-1 chain, secured by validators running a consensus algorithm called HyperBFT. The docs split it in two. HyperCore holds the perp and spot order books and the margin engine. HyperEVM runs standard smart contracts and can use HyperCore's liquidity.

The docs put throughput at about 200,000 orders per second and median latency at 0.2 seconds for a co-located client. Trading has no gas fee. You pay gas only to deposit from another chain, and [the docs name USDC on Arbitrum](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/onboarding/how-to-start-trading) as a common route.

### Perpetuals, funding and liquidations

A perpetual contract has no expiry. You post USDC as margin and go long or short with leverage. Max leverage on the core markets [runs from 3x to 40x depending on the asset](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/trading/perpetual-assets).

To keep the contract near the spot price, [funding](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/trading/funding) moves between longs and shorts every hour and is capped at 4% per hour. Hyperliquid takes no cut of it.

[Liquidation](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/trading/liquidations) starts when account equity falls below maintenance margin, which is half the initial margin at an asset's max leverage. The position is sold into the book. If equity drops below two thirds of maintenance margin, the liquidator vault takes the position over and you lose the maintenance margin too.

## HIP-3: stocks, gold and oil

[HIP-3](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/hyperliquid-improvement-proposals-hips/hip-3-builder-deployed-perpetuals) lets outside teams, called deployers, launch their own perp markets on Hyperliquid's engine. A deployer defines the oracle and contract rules, sets leverage, can settle the market, and must stake 500,000 HYPE. Validators can slash that stake.

The biggest deployer is trade\[XYZ\]. On 28 October, [TokenPost counted](https://www.tokenpost.com/news/investing/42970) 169 live HIP-3 markets with $4.12 billion in open interest, 97% of it in trade\[XYZ\]'s markets. The largest were the S&P 500, gold and WTI crude. Other trackers count markets differently.

These are contracts on a price, not shares. You get no vote and no dividend, and the deployer's oracle decides what the price is. Our [11 perp DEX comparison](https://www.w3match.com/blog/top-perp-dexs-compared) covers how this differs from other venues.

## What HYPE crypto does

From the docs and Hyperliquid's own materials:

- **Staking.** HYPE is delegated to validators. The docs' example is a reward of about 2.37% a year at 400 million HYPE staked, and the rate falls as more is staked. Unstaking takes 7 days.
- **Fee discounts.** Staked HYPE cuts trading fees, from 5% above 10 HYPE to 40% above 500,000.
- **Network use.** HYPE pays for network costs, including gas on HyperEVM, and backs HIP-3 deployers.
- **Burn.** Fees go to HLP, the Assistance Fund and deployers. The docs say the Assistance Fund converts fees into HYPE automatically and burns it.

What the docs do not say is that this lifts the price. That is an assumption, and price depends on demand. A [MiCA white paper hosted by OKX](https://www.okx.com/en-us/learn/hyperliquid-white-paper) states that holding HYPE gives no claim to profits or dividends.

## HYPE during the Binance hack

On 30 October, [CoinDesk reported](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/10/30/crypto-liquidations-jump-to-usd1-57-billion-as-binance-hack-sends-bitcoin-ether-lower) that HYPE rose 15% and its open interest jumped 28% while the rest of the market fell after the $6.3 billion Binance hack. Futures liquidations hit $1.57 billion. Our [hack report](https://www.w3match.com/blog/binance-hack-polymarket-hack-october-2026) has the full timeline.

That shows relative strength, and the cause is open. One possible explanation is news from 29 October, when [ICE announced](https://ir.theice.com/press/news-details/2026/Intercontinental-Exchange-and-TradeXYZ-to-Bring-Hyperliquid-Based-Perpetual-Markets-Onshore/default.aspx) a deal with trade\[XYZ\] to build a US-regulated market on Hyperliquid, subject to regulatory approvals. [24/7 Wall St](https://247wallst.com/investing/cryptocurrency/2026/10/30/hyperliquid-hype-rose-4-while-crypto-fell-7-after-the-binance-hack-is-money-moving-from-binance-to-hyperliquid/) noted that much of the rise came before Binance froze withdrawals, and it also raised short covering as a factor. Money leaving Binance is not confirmed. Binance [reopened withdrawals on 1 November](https://www.w3match.com/blog/binance-withdrawals-after-hack-26-hours-data).

CoinDesk's Week Ahead lists a HYPE unlock on 6 November: 0.08% of circulating supply, about $16.77 million. This is not a forecast of anything.

## Hyperliquid fees

Per the [fee page](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/trading/fees) on 2 November, the base rate on perps is 0.045% for takers and 0.015% for makers. Spot starts at 0.070% and 0.040%. Fees fall with 14-day volume and with staked HYPE, and large market makers can earn rebates. HIP-3 markets can use "growth mode", which cuts fees by at least 90%, and deployers can add their own fee share. Funding, spread and slippage come on top.

Under the [referral program](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/referrals), a new user gets 4% off fees on their first $25 million in volume. The referrer earns 10% of the referred user's fees, less that discount. Use the [Hyperliquid referral link](https://www.w3match.com/go/hyperliquid?from=%2Fblog%2Fwhat-is-hyperliquid-hype-explained) and Pawnie earns that share. The discount does not apply to vaults or sub-accounts.

## Who can use it

The [Terms of Use](https://app.hyperliquid.xyz/terms) (updated 15 June 2026) exclude people in the US, Ontario and sanctioned jurisdictions, and ban VPNs used to hide your location. They also say neither the interface nor Hyperliquid is licensed by any authority. The docs list no separate regional rules for referrals, so these Terms apply and the referral link is not for US users.

The UK FCA [listed Hyperliquid as unauthorised](https://decrypt.co/370117/hyperliquid-hit-by-uk-fca-warning-crypto-perps-face-scrutiny) in a 21 May notice. Singapore's MAS added it to its [Investor Alert List](https://cointelegraph.com/news/hyperliquid-singapore-mas-investor-alert-list) on 26 June, which is a warning and not a ban. Check your local rules before you deposit.

## Risks

- **Leverage.** A small move against a high-leverage position can wipe out the margin.
- **HLP and JELLY.** On 26 March 2025 a trader pushed the price of the JELLY token and left the HLP vault holding a losing short. [CoinDesk reported](https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2025/03/26/hyperliquid-delists-jellyjelly-after-vault-squeezed-in-usd13m-tussle) an unrealised loss of $13.5 million at one point. Validators voted to delist JELLY and settle positions at $0.0095, and the Foundation said it would compensate users other than flagged addresses. HYPE fell about 20%. [Blockworks](https://blockworks.com/news/hyperliquid-decentralization-validator-put) said critics called the move a "validator put".
- **Validators.** About 27 validators are active, and the docs say [no automatic slashing](https://hyperliquid.gitbook.io/hyperliquid-docs/hypercore/staking) is implemented. On 14 October, [uwuu.ai](https://uwuu.ai/blog/hyperliquid-review) read the five Hyper Foundation validators at about 47% of active stake. Consensus needs more than two thirds, so by that arithmetic no vote passes without them.
- **HIP-3 concentration.** One deployer carries 97% of that open interest.

If you plan to trade, size the position so that losing all of it is acceptable. Use the [referral link](https://www.w3match.com/go/hyperliquid?from=%2Fblog%2Fwhat-is-hyperliquid-hype-explained) only if your country allows it.

## FAQ

### Is Hyperliquid a stock?

No. Hyperliquid is a protocol and exchange, and there are no shares to buy. Searches for "Hyperliquid stock" usually mean one of four things. HYPE is a token and gives no ownership. Hyperliquid Strategies (Nasdaq: PURR) is a separate company that holds HYPE and [says it is not affiliated](https://hypestrat.xyz/investors) with Hyperliquid. US ETFs such as 21Shares THYP, Bitwise BHYP and Grayscale HYPG hold HYPE, and [trade since May and June 2026](https://cryptoetf.today/en/crypto-etf-filings/coin/hyperliquid). Stock perps on Hyperliquid track share prices without giving you shares.

### What is HYPE?

The native token of Hyperliquid, used for staking, network costs and fee discounts. It carries no claim on profits.

### Is Hyperliquid safe?

No venue is risk free. There is no company account, but deposits sit in Hyperliquid's own onchain system and not in your wallet. Leverage, liquidations, oracle choices and validator concentration are real risks.

### Can you use Hyperliquid in the US?

No. The Terms of Use exclude US residents and people located in the US.
